History geeks, park goers, and nature buffs alike find it easy to call Hawaii home. The
rich heritage, unique history, and interesting geography, paired with the state’s natural
beauty, has made Hawaii’s lands some of the most protected in the world. Owning
homes in Hawaii allows residents and visitors alike to enjoy the true splendor of the
island environment through the unfiltered vision of a kama’aina, or local. Haleakala and
Hawaii Volcanoes are the two national parks located in Hawaii, both surrounding some
of the largest volcanoes in the world. Kilauea, located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National
Park, is the world’s most active volcano and is currently adding to the Big Island’s
already massive area. There are three national historical parks in the state, including
Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, and
Puuhonoua o Honaunau National Historical Park. A variety of other protected areas
include the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri,
and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. The later is 140,000 square
miles, larger than all of the nation’s national parks combined, and covers reefs, atolls,
and shallow and deep sea that is home to many indigenous and endangered species,
including a number of turtles and birds that frequent the region.
